The Scientist / Chemist will be responsible for materials formulation, applications development, and supporting the detector development team with sample preparation and characterization for Authentication Technologies programs for the Fine Chemicals business. Position will be located in Ft Washington, PA

Authentication Technologies (AT) is part of the Fine Chemicals business unit, and is a leader in the development of Authentication solutions for banknotes, coins, high value documents and materials packaging.

The candidate will be responsible for formulating organic and inorganic security pigments into inks, coatings, polymers, and dispersions used to demonstrate Honeywell's security pigments and detectors in customer's applications. Candidate will also support detector and pigment development team by preparing test coatings and test articles containing experimental pigments that enable detector and pigment innovation. Candidate will work to achieve proper pigment content to balance detectability with visual covertness and implementation cost. Candidate may need to perform brightness, spectral, and other use testing to support customer application development, pigment development, and detector development.

This scientist will be expected work on a team to originate and execute R&D plans related to the use of security taggants and phosphors in valued-added applications, develop intellectual property, support new project proposals, assess competitive technologies and products, and develop new technologies for future products. This will include understanding customer requirements, translating those into product requirements, performing trade studies, writing research and development proposals, project cost estimating, budgeting, and program management. The scientist must be technically creative, have strong organizational and communication skills, and able to work in a collaborative environment.


-Leads material application development including printing and ink formulations

-Preparation of printed test samples containing pigments and/or phosphors to enable prototype development, detector validation testing, and customer support

-Lead new customer applications testing and innovation

-Work closely with optical, mechanical, and software engineers to develop robust, high-quality sensor solutions

-Develops a clear understanding of customer technical requirements, and is able to translate into plans to address, and involving multiple sites and external partners

-Generate new ideas and help drive technology development project pipeline

-Design of experiments and create test matrices to support detector engineering team

-Significant hands on testing of material samples, product evaluations, and trouble-shooting required

-Travel required, including international (>20%)

*Must be eligible for a US security clearance. Strong preference given to individuals who already have a DoD clearance*

  • B.S. degree in organic Chemistry, materials Science, chemical Engineering, Physical organic Chemistry, or other suitable field
  • 5+ years of hands-on Experience in printing ink development and printing techniques including flexo, off-set, lithography, gravure, screen, pad, and inkjet
  • 5+ years of hands-on Experience with Material characterization techniques such as particle size analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, dispersion stability, and rheology
  • Significant hands-on experience and chemistry knowledge with a proven track record in one or more of the following areas:
  • Synthesis of organic and inorganic pigments
  • Coating development
  • Dispersion formulation development with inorganic and organic pigments, and/or dyes
  • Experience with security pigments and luminophores for anti-counterfeiting applications such as currency, high-value documents, and brand protection
  • Experience with laboratory optical systems set up and measurement (UV-Vis, NIR, fluorescence spectroscopy)
  • Six Sigma Training (Green or Black belt)
  • Knowledge and Experience in developing intellectual property including patents and assessments
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
