Reporting to the Director, Innovation, this position plays a critical role in the combined innovation center of excellence for UOP and Honeywell Process Solutions called the Applied Process Excellence (APEX) center. This organization, composed of UOP and HPS expert resources, focuses on growth and innovative technology, incorporating a “One Honeywell” approach to product offerings to both current and prospective customers of each business. APEX is expected to deliver very aggressive growth targets in new product and business offerings supporting the existing UOP and HPS lines of business.

This role will act as the APEX expert in general software application architecture. This will involve creating solution models and prototypes, evaluating potential risks and defects, analyzing specifications and customizing applications for specific target users, while considering areas of disaster recovery, data integrity and security. As such, this role will evaluate and recommend software technologies in these areas, evaluate alternatives, and analyze problems with data infrastructures. In addition, this role is expected to contribute significantly to the actual coding needed to support any particular APEX Innovation development effort. Lastly, the role will be expected to think both as a business leader and a technical expert. A focused development approach with a sense of urgency, driven by business needs, will be a critical success factor as a member of the APEX team. This position will work alongside other UOP and HPS process experts and be a key contributor to the pipeline of new innovations combining UOP and HPS technology. This position will be located in Des Plaines, IL.

The expertise, knowledge, and support of this engineering consultant type role will be used in technology development projects in the form of FEED, designs, reviews, customer meetings, all in order to assure correct, consistent and efficient (special) functionality of the solutions provided in the project. Working with other experts in areas of process controls, and operating as a joint COE of technology under UOP and HPS, this role will help design and develop technologies for innovative combined business solutions.


Understand the issues clients are facing and introduce the best technical solution for these problems, working closely with other subject matter experts on the APEX Innovation team and other teams within UOP and HPS

Assess the interaction/interface between applications, databases, and middleware systems to identify and address problems/gaps in functional coverage

Create prototypes and finished products via understanding of design and production procedures and standards

Effectively communicate, at various stages during a development effort, what is the basis for the application design and what are the potential risks associated with the various options

Offer viable solutions, employing various systems and architectures, to service the refining, petrochemical and chemical businesses that makeup our UOP customer base.

Carry out design and source code reviews to ensure conformance to set application standards

Conduct analysis to identify trends in application architecture and apply them in applications development

Collaborate with other development and technical teams to implement software solutions that meet the architectural goals and standards of the Honeywell organization

Ensure a seamless integration of new and existing systems to eliminate potential problems and maintain data structure and integrity

Maintain a high level of general knowledge of engineering solutions to be able to influence/lead internal and external customers in the effective management of innovations from concept to commercialization in support of the overall objectives of the business (including continuous improvement of delivered margin, customer satisfaction, schedule, working capital and safety performance).

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or a related engineering discipline
  • Problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Extensive experience in software developing and programming
  • Strong relevant process industry experience
  • Project management skills including tracking cost and schedule
  • Experience in development project execution including planning, organizing, monitoring and successfully completing multidisciplinary projects
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team that delivers software enabled solutions keeping a close watch and both delivery schedule and development project costs
  • Strong interpersonal and customer facing skills
  • Strong analytical and integrative thinking skills
  • Familiarity with as many of these programming languages as possible:
